Turkey Family Adventures

Every year, we spend at least two months in Turkey with our sons. Both of them were born along the Southwest coast of Turkey, by the Mediterranean. They love cruising on a gulet, playing backgammon with the crew members, eating wonderful Turkish meals on board prepared by the chef, diving into turquoise waters and hiking to the ancient ruins...

In Cappadocia, one of their favorite activities is to try their hand at  pottery... We visit 9th century churches carved into the rocks, explore underground cities where Hittites hid themselves and stay at cave hotels.... Kids often think that they are in "Star Wars" Land when they are hiking through the Cappadocian landscape..

Istanbul is another favorite... Kids are fascinated that the city is on two continents... Cruising between two continents, they stand on one side and say "I'm in Asia now" and then on the other side "I'm in Europe now"... They love learning to bargain in the Grand Bazaar, shopping for everything Turkish...

They learn so much about history, from ancient Greeks to Alexander the Great, from Romans to Byzantines an Ottomans... The whole country is like an outdoor museum, they sit at the steps of a Greek theatre from the 1st Century BC and pretend to be actors, they see lots of ancient Roman sites such as Ephesus...

Food is another favorite thing on these trips: from kebabs to meatballs, from Turkish ice cream to baklava... We haven't seen any kid saying no to these dishes...

These family trips are ideal for creating lifelong memories that bond families together. We often have multi generational families, from grandparents to grandkids... There's something to discover for people of any age... Gathering around the outdoor dining table on the aft deck and sharing a great meal while reminiscing about the day's delights, surprises and shared adventures....There's nothing better!
