Day 11
Early cruise to Çavus,
where we'll paddle to a luminescent sea cave and then hike through
pine forests along the shore. Later we'll have lunch and kayak
to Olympus Beach. Afternoon free to experience the ancient site
of Olympus and see where the Caretta turtles hatch. There's a
nice café on the beach for those who want to relax and
play backgammon. Sunset hike through local farms to Chimera (2.5
hours round trip) to see the mythological fires at the top of
Mount Olympus.
Day 12
Kayak the dramatic coastline
beneath the towering peaks of the Taurus mountains en route to
Phaselis (two to three hours). Walk through the ancient site
of Phaselis where Alexander the Great made camp for the winter
in the 4th century BCE. Visit remains of the theatre, agora,
baths, and the aqueducts of Phaselis. Sit among pine trees and
imagine those ancient times, while gazing down at the Mediterranean.
Our last night on the boat usually brings out the belly dancers
in the group!
"The
exploratory was a revelation. I had been guiding traditional
gulet trips for seven years but once we eased into our sea kayaks
a whole new world opened up. We saw rare dolphins at eye level,
discovered luminescent sea caves, paddled into hidden bays and
snorkeled over sunken ruins I never even knew existed. At one
point we even paddled up to a 4th century BCE Lycian tomb and
looked inside. We went places you could only reach by kayak.
It was fascinating." - Jale Boga-Robertson (Trip Leader)
