EPHESUS and PERGAMUM
EXTENSION
Ephesus is the best-preserved
ancient city in Turkey, famous for its Celsus library (seen above),
great theatre, marble streets, temples, and baths. It's situated
in the fertile Ionian landscape and has been known throughout
history for its temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of
the World. Ephesus is considered to be the showpiece among all
the antique cities of the world.
Another site that you'll
visit during your extension is Pergamum. It was an ancient city
founded by colonists on the Aegean coast of Anatolia at the site
of the present-day city of Bergama. The city attained a high
culture in the Hellenistic era, boasting an outstanding library
that rivaled in importance that of Alexandria, a famous school
of sculpture and excellent public buildings and monuments of
which the Zeus Altar is the best example.
TRIP ITINERARY
Day 1 - Fly to Izmir on the early morning
flight arriving around 8:30AM. Meet your guide at the airport
and drive to Ephesus. Visit the ruins of Ephesus; the library
of Celsus, temple of Hadrian, the theater and the Odeon. After
lunch you'll visit the Museum of Selcuk where you'll see the
artifacts discovered in Ephesus are displayed. Among them, the
magnificent marble statues of the fertility goddess, Artemis
(also known as Cybele and Diana) and other antiquities that Ephesians
used in their daily lives. In the afternoon we'll visit the mosque
of Isa Bey and the Basilica of St.John, built by the emperor
Justinian. We'll drive back to Izmir and check in to our hotel.
Lunch and dinner are included.
Day 2 - Drive to Pergamon. Visit the Acropolis, temple
of Athena, and the royal temple of Trojan. Later visit the temple
of Dionysus, Altar of Zeus, and see the red Basilica and temple
of Serapis. After lunch, visit the Archaeological and Ethnographic
Museum and the Asclepion, the medical center of the ancient world.
We'll drive back to Izmir and check in to our hotel. All meals
are included today.
Day 3- After breakfast, morning transfer
to Izmir airport and fly to Istanbul.
